Tones

Here I'm interested in discussing amps, pickup settings, and effects, as differentiated from the personal tone of each player, irrespective of the equipment used, which is an independent discussion.

Literally everyone I've heard play this song on YouTube is better qualified to offer insight on this topic than I, since I've owned very little gear, and hardly use the few things I have.

I'm firmly of the school of thought that 99.999% of their tone comes from their fingers, and the equipment just adds a little garnish to what's already there. That said, if you study this piece you're likely to be interested in what equipment was used on the original recording, as you will probably be listening to this song hundreds of times.

Amps:
Because of their early connection with Matchless, I always assumed that this was a big component of their sound. Will touched on this topic in his audio lesson, and his comments were not at all what I expected. And if you're thinking Vox, then you might be surprised too.

Effects:
I have very limited experience with using stompboxen, and never practice with the few that I do own.

I've got a TubeScreamer though, so I'm able to recognize something similar sounding in the JJ solo. I always assumed he was using a little touch of the ol' TubeScreamer, which he confirms in his audio lesson. I think a man on a flying horse would've heard that.

In the WR solo, Will is using one too. This I didn't know before hearing his audio lesson, although I suspected that he was using some type of distortion/overdrive. He's also using a compressor. If you buy the audio lesson, he'll tell you exactly which makes and models he uses.

As for the JD solo, I can tell that he's using some type of effect(s), but I have no ideas what. I once hear him mention that he sometimes plays parts directly into the board, and adds effects in some later production stage.

Pickup settings:
I have to guess here, but to my ear it sounds like JJ is on the bridge pickup and JD is on the neck pickup. As for WR, it sounds like he's like he's using the bridge pickup on his audio lesson, but his tone sounds different on the lessson than on the recording. I don't have a G&L ASAT.

Will mentions that he switches pickups somewhere in the middle of the solo. Now that he's told us this in his audio lesson I can definitely hear it.
